The latest FAO report on the sector encourages governments to ensure sustainable fisheries
Fisheries and aquaculture play a crucial role in food security and nutrition and livelihoods of millions of people, according to the latest issue of FAO on this sector.
The report reveals that the industry produced a record 128 million tonnes of fish for human consumption -an average of 18.4 kg per person- which provided 15% of animal protein intake to over 4,300 million people. Fishing and aquaculture are a source of income for 55 million people. Furthermore, the livelihoods of 12% of the world's population depends directly or indirectly from fisheries and aquaculture. It is estimated that during the past year, the global fish trade reached a record volume of 125,000 million dollars.
In its report, the FAO urged governments to do everything possible to ensure sustainable fisheries worldwide, and that 30% of marine fish stocks are overfished and 57% are fully exploited.
